I’m still pining for summer… Now I’m thinking herbs and all the lovely recipes that you can create with them. My thoughts for today are focusing on cocktails!
Everyone knows the ubiquitous mojito, terrific to use up all that spearmint that grows everywhere (I have particularly aggressive roots that climb vertically up through walls and emerge a couple feet above the ground, looking for a new spot to grow), but what about a Mint-Ginger Caipiroska or a Basil French 75?
The ingredients for the Caipiroska are :
3 slices fresh ginger
1 1/2 teaspoons superfine sugar
5 mint sprigs
4 ounces vodka
Muddle ginger with sugar in a glass. Add mint sprigs. Muddle until fragrant. Add vodka and ice. Garnish with mint. Stir.
The ingredients for the Basil French 75 are:
5 basil leaves
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce lemon juice
4 ounces Champagne
Muddle basil leaves with sugar in a shaker. Add gin, lemon juice, and ice. Shake, and strain. Add ice and Champagne.
(these two cocktails are lifted from Martha Stewart – there are also a couple other tasty treats if you search the cocktail names)
So what does ‘muddle’ mean? To muddle is to combine ingredients, in this case in the bottom of a cocktail glass, by squishing them with a muddler before adding the majority of the liquids. And a great way to extract the oils that will scent and flavor your drink.
The list of herbs that can be used in a drink are limitless, spearmint, basil, thyme, orange thyme, lemon thyme, rosemary… Use your imagination and go wild! Happy drinking!
