So it seems to be the time of year when the neighborhood coyotes are looking for easy pickings, and they think my girls are the easy pickings. Not so I say!
I’m not overly worried for their physical safety, our run is really well made (thanks to the Hubby) and they would need to dig quite deep to get in there. I do worry about their mental health though (feel free to rank on me – I also put herbs like lavender in their nesting boxes so the girls can enjoy the fragrance). Can you imagine what it’s like sitting on your little roost with the coyotes howling outside in the dark, knowing you’re the desired target?
I have predator lights installed and as I said, it’s a pretty solid run, but I’m still going to try and scare them off: lights on motion detectors, possibly portable electric wire, wolf urine, human urine (yes, gross I know, but my boys are dying to help!) and anything else I can think of. We have dogs but I really wouldn’t want them to have a run-in with a large pack of coyotes, so they stay in at night. I’ve read of people using other large animals like llamas for protection, but I’m not sure I’m at that stage just yet!
And if anyone has any additional suggestions for keeping the beasties away I would love to hear them! The girls are a part of the family and I want them to be happy in their home…
