Do any of you out there agonize over your Christmas menu the way my clan does? …And for everyone in my clan reading this post, sorry, I’m exposing our craziness…
We start the serious menu conversation somewhere in August, and it rages on over the months at various get togethers. For the past few years we’ve gone with classic fish for Christmas Eve from just about every corner of the country – Dungeness crabs, stone crab claws, maryland crab claws, oysters, Maine lobsters, shrimp etc., you get the idea. And of course it’s game birds of some sort for Christmas dinner – goose, duck, pheasant, quail, chuckers etc., some ordered in and occasionally some shot by the hubby. It’s always a yummy meal – even when it’s not – and a ton of fun!
Debate doesn’t rage as aggressively over side dishes, but it’s there none the less. It’s kind of a subtext. I’ll be planning holiday sides when I shop for seedlings in the spring. The specific vegetable doesn’t always make it into the final meal plan, but it’s fun to plot and plan anyway. While I know this is not the best use of garden space, there’s nothing like making a side and saying it’s from your garden. I plant a dedicated row of leeks every year for leek and potato soup, and butternut squash is growing for whipped squash or what I like to call ‘adult baby food’. So good!
This year we’re shaking up Christmas Dinner a bit and having a massive chunk of red meat. Believe me, change is hard for our clan gathering but I have hope that we’ve broken out of our rut and we might be starting a new food tradition! So do you all have any kind of food tradition in your family??? I’d love to hear about it!
