Propagating is super easy and inexpensive, so when I was surfing Pinterest last week and fell in love with a massive planter someone had put together, I decided to recreate it myself with some plants I already have on hand. The container contained cannas (soon to be red with a dark vein running through the leaves), a purple scaevola (I’m swapping in plumbago), gaura, a purple dracaena (I have two from last year), Ipomoea and tradescantia pallida a.k.a. purple wandering jew.
Purple wandering jew is a crazy, easy plant to grow. When I lived in Miami this was one of the plants they used on the freeways, so you know it’s a survivor. It also propagates EASILY… You can drop it in a glass of water and it will root… So, all that being said, this is what I did to turn one houseplant into ten.
I snipped pieces of my plant with mostly straight stems, and that also had a few leaves along the length of it (there’s a spot above the leaf that’s called the node and that’s where the roots will develop from so including that part is essential).
I dipped the ends into rooting hormone being sure to cover the leaf node. This step is not completely necessary but since I have rooting hormone I do it anyway. Rooting hormone just gives it a little extra oomph and on plants that won’t root easily it’s a lifesaver.
Place the cutting in a whole you’ve made in your prepared pots (remember to prepare the pots ahead of time) and gently tamp the soil down around it. Thats it! Done. I’m going to leave these in a warm spot inside and keep the soil evenly moist until they produce roots. They should be ready for the planters by mid May.
Propagating is very easy and you should give it a try with other plants in your garden. Everyone dreams of that massive hedge of blue hydrangea mid summer right? This is how you do it without breaking the bank and here is a link on other plants you can work with. You can thank me later for your abundant garden!
And for full disclosure, I have my little Amazon store at the top of my page and the link for rooting hormone goes straight there. Anything you buy via my site helps keep me up and running! Many thanks!!!
