We have new additions to the family, surprise baby chicks (3 to be exact)!
Cute aren’t they? I received a text from our pet sitter and someone had chicks that needed a home. Since we lost several of our girls this winter to the coyotes, and I feel confident that we can protect the remaining flock after security upgrades, we decided to bring them home.
Unfortunately we have no clue what they are and despite spending way too much time surfing web sites with super cute chick photos this weekend, I’m still in the dark. And on a side note, you’d be surprised at the results you get surfing cute chick photos – just sayin’.
I was a bit unprepared and had to scramble for accommodations. Usually I like to put them in a large cardboard box with their food, water and warmer. This time all I had was a giant tin tub – I’ll need to upgrade quickly! They grow fast.
And if you’re wondering what the yellow thing is that they’re standing on, it’s a chick brooder, specifically a Brinsea EcoGlow. It’s a great alternative to a heat lamp if you’re thinking about starting a flock. It doesn’t use much electricity, but the best point is safety. Heat lamps cause fires often and this doesn’t. It was the reason I bought it and I also have it in my ‘Favorite Things’ list if you’re looking into one. Great product!
So cross your fingers that there aren’t any roosters! and if you have a clue what kind of chickies these are, drop me a line!
