Dividing clivia (or anything for that matter) isn’t difficult, and my Mom had a clivia that desperately needed dividing. Desperately being an understatement.
When I went to ‘attack’ it, out it popped, primarily because it was so large and top heavy it had already fallen over earlier in the day and dislodged itself.
Did I lie? And clivia like to be pot bound but this is a bit much.
Yes. A steak knife. I didn’t say this was going to be pretty.
Don’t be shy.
I hacked out three plants and could have done more but I didn’t want to kill anyone.
Watered in and happy. She kept one, shared one and gave the other to me! Gardeners are the best!
This is a great time of year to take your unruly houseplants outside and divide or repot them. The mess is outside and you can give your plants a bath at the same time. The one thing to remember though is that if you hall them out and are leaving them for a bit, be certain they start out in the shade or you will scorch (or kill) them. They aren’t used to the bright rays of the sun yet and won’t like them. They need to be hardened off a bit.
Happy gardening everyone!
