My garden is absolutely out of control with more produce than I can possibly manage, but I think I understand how our forefathers (mothers) managed massive quantities from their gardens – check out these nineteenth century canning recipes. The sheer volume is frightening.
They look happy don’t they? They’re wearing full length dresses in the summer and working in a kitchen that’s probably in the high 90’s, what’s not to smile about???
I especially like the pickled cucumber recipe with ‘ten dozen cucumbers’. Holy moly that’s a lot! It definitely makes you appreciate how easy our modern lives are.
