Sometimes in the garden you just have to try something and hope it works, and I’m calling this veggie experiment ‘Summer’s Surprise Tomatoes’ because they were so unbelievably freaking good.
What are they you ask? ‘No clue’ I answer, and that’s because I used seed from an organic tomato I bought at the grocery store. When I brought them home, they were a fabulous, pale, pale yellow – truly a lovely color, and nicely sweet. From the garden, they are a fabulous, pale, pale yellow and they turn out to be crazy, crazy sweet, like candy from the garden (the ones above are too old believe it or not, they get darker as they age and the skin toughens). Oh, and I grew them in containers because I started them so late in the year I didn’t have a square foot of space left. They were prolific. Beyond prolific. They went crazy and have supplied me with enough cherry tomatoes to eat fresh/cook/can/freeze. I can’t even imagine what will happen when they can get their roots into the garden soil next year, tomato explosion I hope!
Happy Fall all! Enjoy these last few days of warmth before the season changes!
